TOUGH GUYS

Of course, no discussion of a police show would be complete without a post about the bad guys.  And in one episode, they are portrayed with surprising dimension.
______________________________________

In an interrogation room, sits 2 men at a table.  A rugged looking character, and another, who looks like he belongs in 1st year Calculus...  But, they are brothers.  Leaning against a wall, is rookie Dov Epstein, played by Gregory Smith.  The rugged guy is headed for prison [again], and the younger brother could too - if he does not tell what he knows...He tries to be tough, but he is obviously terrified.

"I could do it...the time."

The rugged ex-con knows that his younger brother won't last 5 minutes in maximum security, but he does not say this.  Instead, the big brother delivers, gently, the following line:

"I know you can...but I don't want you to."

ROOKIE BLUE FAN WAITING FOR JUNE 2012

VETERANS MESS UP TOO

The word rookie seems to make one think of...mistakes.  As in they always seem to make them.  But, in the pilot episode, it becomes clear that often a rookie's mistake is the direct result of a training officer's mistake.
_______________________________________

Andy ends up arresting an undercover narcotics officer.  One that she encountered during a room by room search of a building.  A search that she was conducting alone.  And why was she alone?  Because her then training officer allowed Andy and another rookie to do a search...because back up had not arrived, and he was busy too.

BREAKBREAKBREAK !!!!!!!!!!

Well, it's official.  December 18, 2011 will be the last day this year when I will post.  The university library extended hours end that night.  [I find that I prefer writing there.]

I'll resume in June of 2012.  A hiatus for me; a break for you!!!!

The blog will still be around for viewing [I know I'll peak every now and then], and commenting too.

AIDAN DEVINE [from BROAD DAYLIGHT; Episode 5]

My posts seem to suggest that there are only a couple of characters on Rookie Blue.  Actually, there are many and each could be the subject of a good post.
_______________________________________

Case in point:  Staff Sgt. Boyko [played by Aidan Devine]

His most compelling scene [in my opinion] occurs when he is discussing a family violence/break and enter situation that spun out of control - with Andy right in the middle of it.
____________

A confrontation between a man and his stepson. The stepson just fresh out of jail, and looking for family jewelry to sell...for drugs.
____________

Staff Sgt. Boyko, a seasoned officer, discusses the case, in his office, with Andy.  His instincts tell him that there is still a missing piece to the puzzle.  Finally, Andy admits that she had forgot to load her gun at the beginning of her shift. [I do recall that during the crisis, Andy did notice that her gun did seem slightly lighter]
_________________

With this admission, the tone of the scene changes.  Boyko drops some papers on his desk, and we hear compassion in his voice.

"It happens...that's why you have a partner."

The last scene image is of Andy. Quiet.  Eyes glistening.

THE JOKE BOOK [from BIG NICKEL; Episode 10]

Sam and his trainee, Andy, have to go on a long ride, in order to pick up a prisoner.  An awkward ride because of what happened in a previous episode:  During a power failure, Andy sought comfort from Sam...she had fatally shot a suspect just hours before.  A sexual predator and murderer.
_______________________________________

By candlelight, for a moment, she let herself go.  And then, the power came back on.  She came to her senses...remembered her boyfriend, Luke.  And the spell was broken.
_______________

Hence the awkward road trip.  In a diner, Sam realized that it was he who was making the trip awkward...Andy had finally given up on small talk.  So, Sam summoned the waitress, and ...

                                SAM
My partner would like to know
if you've got any henways on the
             menu?

                           WAITRESS
             What's a henway?

                               SAM
             About 3 lbs.

And with that, Andy tries not to laugh out loud, but does.  And, the tension is broken.  Sam finally realized that he should never have given Andy a hard time about the other night.  Because all she did was change her mind.

UNDERCOVER [UC]; from FITE NITE [Episode 3]

Donovan Boyd.  This character, played by Aaron Abrams, makes a good first impression.  In the episode, Boyd is new to undercover work, and is the key person in an operation to gain possession of armour piercing [cop killing] bullets.

We see him talking to the hidden camera, just before a deal is to take place in the room.  Boyd is concerned that the sounds of arguing in one of the other apartments might interfere with the recording of the negotiations. He keeps pointing up at an area of the ceiling.  In short, Boyd seems totally dedicated, totally professional.

The first sign of trouble, is that a bit later, he starts to take a real disliking to our heroine, Andy McNally [played by Missy Peregrym].

Eventually, Boyd will become a most unlikable character.  But Donovan Boyd never stops being an important part of the Rookie Blue adventure.

EPISODE 1: FRESH PAINT

Okay...a couple of weeks ago, I rented Rookie Blue, Season 1.  Box Set, one month rental.  $19.63.
___________________

One of the final scenes of the pilot episode illustrates just how special the lead character, Andy McNally really is...
_________

Her first real arrest, a very young man who shot a dealer [responsible for the OD of the young man's kid sister]...The young man is very lucky that he ran into a rookie, because only a rookie, this rookie, would have handled things the way Andy did.  To start with, she didn't shoot him.  Procedure dictated that she should have...since he had threatened her with the murder weapon.
_________

The moment that illuminates is the shot showing McNally as she hands over her first arrest to her training officer.  The actress' face shows compassion for the young man's situation...we also see that she's just as surprised as her training officer is.  As her father says later, you're the real deal, Andy.  And you're going to be great.

P.S.

Feels nice to post again.  I've decided that I'll post till late December, and then stop till June 2012.  That's when Rookie's 3rd season begins.  Then I'll start posting [about season 2] and restore comment capability also.

ROOKIE BLUE BLOG 101 [Seminar; non-credit. Prerequisite: Hill Street Blues]

At first glance, this blog may seem to lack structure.  This is my fault.  There is no overall plan, other than to write about what spontaneously comes to mind.  A legacy of a writing exercise, during a creative writing course I took in 1993.  [Bruce Armstrong, WFNS]

One way to understand Rookie Blue is to compare it with a past police show.  Hill Street Blues was the last police show that really made me watch.  The two are opposites.  Hill, because its focus is on veteran cops operating in a crime infested zone, is much raunchier.

                    "Name?"

                    "Curtis."

                    "Curtis what?"

                    "Curtis...interruptus!"

Some of Rookie's finest moments are quiet ones.  Like when a veteran tries to help a rookie through a difficult time.

                   "How are you doing?

                   "Good...I'm good."

                   "Yeah?  You killed somebody
                     today."

                   "Yeah..."

"You ever feel like talking, you
                     let me know...alright?

                   "Yeah...thanks."

[veteran Sam; and Andy, she's one of the rookies]

THAT'S WHY IT'S FUN

The 1st season's finale...There's a shot of Sam & Andy, just after they've exited the van.  On their way to a meeting with a drug boss. [a charming, but psychotic man]
__________________________________

The two are arm in arm, dressed like it's Friday night and they're headed downtown.  Andy's terrified, but this feeling is just short of panic...because Sam is with her.  And because he, minutes before, made her admit her fears out loud, because he knows [possibly since he is a veteran cop], that this can help keep such fears in check.
