TOUGH GUYS

Of course, no discussion of a police show would be complete without a post about the bad guys.  And in one episode, they are portrayed with surprising dimension.

In an interrogation room, sits 2 men at a table.  A rugged looking character, and another, who looks like he belongs in 1st year Calculus...  But, they are brothers.  Leaning against a wall, is rookie Dov Epstein, played by Gregory Smith.  The rugged guy is headed for prison [again], and the younger brother could too - if he does not tell what he knows...He tries to be tough, but he is obviously terrified.

"I could do it...the time."

The rugged ex-con knows that his younger brother won't last 5 minutes in maximum security, but he does not say this.  Instead, the big brother delivers, gently, the following line:

"I know you can...but I don't want you to."

ROOKIE BLUE FAN WAITING FOR JUNE 2012

VETERANS MESS UP TOO

The word rookie seems to make one think of...mistakes.  As in they always seem to make them.  But, in the pilot episode, it becomes clear that often a rookie's mistake is the direct result of a training officer's mistake.

Andy ends up arresting an undercover narcotics officer.  One that she encountered during a room by room search of a building.  A search that she was conducting alone.  And why was she alone?  Because her then training officer allowed Andy and another rookie to do a search...because back up had not arrived, and he was busy too.

BREAKBREAKBREAK !!!!!!!!!!

Well, it's official.  December 18, 2011 will be the last day this year when I will post.  The university library extended hours end that night.  [I find that I prefer writing there.]

AIDAN DEVINE [from BROAD DAYLIGHT; Episode 5]

My posts seem to suggest that there are only a couple of characters on Rookie Blue.  Actually, there are many and each could be the subject of a good post.
_______________________________________

Case in point:  Staff Sgt. Boyko [played by Aidan Devine]

His most compelling scene [in my opinion] occurs when he is discussing a family violence/break and enter situation that spun out of control - with Andy right in the middle of it.
____________

A confrontation between a man and his stepson. The stepson just fresh out of jail, and looking for family jewelry to sell...for drugs.
____________

Staff Sgt. Boyko, a seasoned officer, discusses the case, in his office, with Andy.  His instincts tell him that there is still a missing piece to the puzzle.  Finally, Andy admits that she had forgot to load her gun at the beginning of her shift. [I do recall that during the crisis, Andy did notice that her gun did seem slightly lighter]

With this admission, the tone of the scene changes.  Boyko drops some papers on his desk, and we hear compassion in his voice.

"It happens...that's why you have a partner."

The last scene image is of Andy. Quiet.  Eyes glistening.

THE JOKE BOOK [from BIG NICKEL; Episode 10]

Sam and his trainee, Andy, have to go on a long ride, in order to pick up a prisoner.  An awkward ride because of what happened in a previous episode:  During a power failure, Andy sought comfort from Sam...she had fatally shot a suspect just hours before.  A sexual predator and murderer.
_______________________________________

By candlelight, for a moment, she let herself go.  And then, the power came back on.  She came to her senses...remembered her boyfriend, Luke.  And the spell was broken.
_______________

Hence the awkward road trip.  In a diner, Sam realized that it was he who was making the trip awkward...Andy had finally given up on small talk.  So, Sam summoned the waitress, and ...

                                SAM
My partner would like to know
if you've got any henways on the
             menu?

                           WAITRESS
             What's a henway?

                               SAM
             About 3 lbs.

And with that, Andy tries not to laugh out loud, but does.  And, the tension is broken.  Sam finally realized that he should never have given Andy a hard time about the other night.  Because all she did was change her mind.
